Egypt’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball national team secured the bronze medal and third place at the African Championship held in Angola, which took place alongside the qualifiers for the Wheelchair Basketball World Cup. This achievement further reinforces Egypt’s growing presence on the continental stage.
The result comes as part of the development strategy led by the Egyptian Wheelchair Basketball Federation, under the presidency of May Zein Eldin, aimed at advancing the sport across all levels, from national team preparation to strengthening technical and administrative structures.
The Egyptian team delivered a strong performance throughout the competition, facing a series of challenging matches in a packed schedule on March 25 against Benin, Angola, Congo, and Morocco, amid intense competition from some of the continent’s top teams.
Egypt’s players showcased impressive cohesion, physical readiness, and technical discipline, which translated into positive results and ultimately secured a place on the podium. Their performance highlighted the team’s ability to compete at a high level under pressure, particularly in the fast-paced 3×3 format, which demands speed, precision, and tactical awareness.
This achievement reflects the impact of an intensive preparation period, during which the technical staff focused on improving tactical execution, enhancing fitness levels, and building strong on-court chemistry among players.
The squad featured a balanced mix of experience and ambition, including Ashraf Zaghloul, Ahmed “Bibo,” Mostafa Abdel Moaty “Disha,” Sami Sabawy, and Mahmoud Mahfouz, all of whom contributed to representing Egypt with distinction.
The bronze medal underscores the steady progress of wheelchair basketball in Egypt in recent years, driven by increased international exposure and participation in major continental competitions.
The African 3×3 tournament was held alongside the World Cup qualifiers, where Egypt’s 5×5 national team is also competing for a place on the global stage, adding further significance to the country’s participation in Angola.
