Learn the official rules and regulations of wheelchair basketball
General Rules
- Court dimensions, basket height, and distances (free throw, three-point line, etc.) are the same as in stand-up basketball.
- In 1964, international rules were adopted with minor adjustments for wheelchair play.
Scoring
- Free throw = 1 point.
- Field goal inside the two-point area = 2 points.
- Field goal beyond the three-point line = 3 points.
- Each team has 24 seconds to attempt a shot; exceeding this time results in a turnover.
Duration
- According to IWBF rules, a game consists of 4 periods of 10 minutes each.
- If tied after regulation, a 5-minute overtime is played.
- If still tied, additional overtime periods are played until a winner is determined.
Dribbling
- A player may push the wheelchair and bounce the ball simultaneously.
- If the ball is placed on the lap, the player may push only twice before passing, shooting, or dribbling again.
- There is no double dribble rule.
- Traveling occurs if a player pushes more than twice without dribbling while in possession of the ball.
- Players are not allowed to touch the floor with their feet.
Fouls and Violations
- The wheelchair is considered part of the player’s body for contact responsibility (charging, blocking, out of bounds, etc.).
- An offensive player may not stay in the key area for more than 3 seconds.If tied after regulation, a 5-minute overtime is played.
- If still tied, additional overtime periods are played until a winner is determined.
- On in-bounds plays, the offensive player may not enter the key until the ball is handed to the inbounding player by the referee.
- On in-bounds plays,Players must remain firmly seated in the chair. the offensive player may not enter the key until the ball is handed to the inbounding player by the referee.
- If a player falls out of the chair, the referee may stop play only if there is a risk of injury; otherwise, play continues.
- Technical fouls may be given for:
- Lifting legs or rising from the chair to gain an advantage.
- Using lower limbs to steer the chair or gain an unfair advantage.
